Australian almond production occurs westward from the Riverina region to Sunraysia, Riverland Northern Adelaide Plains and the Swan region in Western Australia. Almond production requires winter chill, and hot, preferably dry harvest weather from Late January to April. Almonds love the Mediterranean type of climate in these production regions that is also excellent for minimising disease pressure. The availability of irrigation water is also a requirement to grow crops in these regions.
Within these producing regions are major regional cities such as Griffith and Mildura and towns such as Hillston, Robinvale and the many located in the Riverland that provide agricultural supplies and the permanent and seasonal staff for the orchards. Almonds are an important part of the diverse horticultural industries that underpin the economic wellbeing of these regions.
Almond Board of Australia
Initially established in 1995 as the Australian Almond Growers Association, in 2002 the association was renamed the Almond Board of Australia (ABA) to reflect a broader membership and charter. The ABA is the peak body for the almond industry in Australia and facilitates the development of the industry whilst seeking to maximise the viability of stakeholders and ensure its sustainability.
The ABA provides a platform for members to collectively respond to industry-wide issues, such as yield improvement, risk management, cost of inputs and their efficient and sustainable use, better management of pests and diseases, building domestic and export consumption and brand awareness of Australian almonds in export markets. The ABA also invests in research and market development, shares knowledge and interacts with the broader community.
