Integrated disease management

Our industry approach

Integrated disease management, or IDM, involves using multiple strategies and practices to protect against disease infection and minimise spread to maintain healthy trees and sustainable yields. The IDM approach considers: orchard design and planting choices; monitoring weather conditions conducive for disease; using cultural and physical practices to avoid infection and spread. While chemical sprays play a part in IDM they are used early and judicially to minimise impacts on beneficial insects e.g. bees. A well-run IDM program should result in reduced use and reliance on synthetic fungicides.

Investment into IDM has focused on improved understanding of disease species found in Australia and developing suitable management strategies in the Australian growing environment for diseases of economic importance.
